Since there really is no grey area it might help to think of how many things that could be a sin he's committed in his life and how many good deeds he's committed. Generally any killing of any kind is considered a sin, and anything excessive. It's more or less based on Buddhist morality. There can be borderline, but it would be borderline one side or the other.

I'm thinking perhaps he would be on the black side.
